Girl Meets World

Someone Else’s Human Being

There’s a family on our floor with 3 children, and they have a 6-year-old daughter, J, who is fascinated with Kaitlyn. She would get excited whenever she saw Kaitlyn at the playground.

“Baby!!!!” She would call out and run over to give Kaitlyn a hug. She’s really sweet. At the playground, she would guide Kaitlyn on her scooter, or hold her hand as she goes down the slide. If the older boys were playing soccer, she would call out to them to be careful, or to pause when Kaitlyn is walking in their path.

There are times too when Kaitlyn can’t go out to play (cos about to have a meal or go down for a nap) so J would just hold her hand through the gate, pat her head, and talk to her. Kaitlyn is very fond of J too. It’s nice to see the 2 little girls forming a friendship.

Today, something happened that tickled me. I knew that J was playing and talking to Kaitlyn at the door. I was in the kitchen preparing her lunch. J’s older brothers were playing with the kids from another floor and one of them kept bugging J to play with them. What he said next was extremely amusing:

“Why you keep touching her? Don’t touch already…

She’s someone else’s human being!”

I chuckled to myself when I heard that because kids really do say the darnedest things! This little boy probably just wanted to tell J that she shouldn’t keep touching Kaitlyn as she didn’t belong to her.

The more I thought about it, the more I realised this boy actually had a point.

Kaitlyn was indeed somebody else’s human being, with that ‘somebody else’ being her birth mother.

But now, she belongs to me — Kaitlyn is my daughter… and will be my little girl forever.

And I thank the Lord for that!

Wisdom oft comes from the mouth of babes.
