The Love For Food

A Chocolate Affair

I’m not a chocolate lover.

Yes, I do eat the occasional chocolate, but I am very, VERY picky about it. Ask my family or my friends. Most will reply I don’t eat chocolate made in Asia.

Any chocolate that I do eat comes from Europe or Australia. I especially enjoy Gianduja the most, but that’s because of the hazelnut flavour.

When it comes to ice cream or cakes, chocolate is a flavour I hardly choose. For ice cream, the only chocolate that comes close is New Zealand’s Natural’s Chocolate Ecstasy.

For chocolate cakes, I grew up with Lana Cakes. This soft, moist chocolate chiffon cake, covered with their signature jelly-like chocolate fudge, was synonymous with family birthdays, anniversaries and get-togethers. It was a cake that wasn’t too sweet yet loved by young and old.

Up till recently, whenever I felt like having a chocolate cake, I’d head to Lana Cakes, mainly for nostalgic reasons. But while on Instagram, I noticed a lot of stories and posts about UPCAKES, so I decided to give it a try to see what the hype was all about.

The chocolate cake did not disappoint. In fact, I think I may have found a new favourite.

~ Looks so good! ~

Packed in a plain white box, the cake looked just like a simple homemade one. With the first spoonful, I was won over.

Its taste was rich and not too sweet. Baked to perfection, the cake had a texture that’s soft and moist but not too dense. The chocolate frosting was literally the icing on the cake, pun intended. One can really savour the bitter sweetness of the chocolate and relish in the smooth chocolatey sensation that’ll send your taste buds into chocolate heaven.

This cake did not last long in my fridge… with the kids and I both craving for the cake, it was soon a plate of crumbs which we licked up with gusto.

~ All gone! ~

The wizards behind this delectable cake are Aaron Lee and his wife. UPCAKES was created out of love for their son, Andrew, who was born with Down Syndrome. Combined that with the love for baking, both experimented with cake recipes until they came upon this winner, taste-approved by Andrew.

Besides founding Essa Grace, a boutique children’s furniture line named after his first child, Aaron and his wife wanted to start a small business for Andrew’s future, as well as raise awareness and acceptance for people with Down Syndrome. With their devotion to their son, and the growing popularity of their delicious cakes, it looks like they have a winning formula!

Also making the ordering process a pleasant experience was Aaron, who was especially friendly and helpful while answering my queries.

If you want to give it a try, head over to https://www.upcakes.sg/ to place your order. Their 3 flavours include the Chocolate Cake, Salted Egg Chocolate Cake, and the most popular MSW Durian Chocolate Cake. I’ll have to give those other 2 flavours a try soon!

All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.
